Campus Recreation Policies and Guidelines
Assumption of Risk
All patrons are required to sign a liability waiver prior to using Campus Recreation facilities. Recreational and fitness activities pose inherent risks. Users should consult a physician prior to participation. If you have special health considerations, allergies, or serious health conditions that could be of immediate concern, please inform the Campus Recreation staff.
Minor participants must have the Assumption of Risk signed by their parent or court-appointed legal guardian. Campus Recreation does not permit notes from home or phone calls in lieu of parent/legal guardian signature. Chaperones may not sign Assumption of Risk for a minor.
Attire and Hygiene
Exposed skin is more at risk of disease, so participants are strongly encouraged to clean fitness equipment both before and after use. In consideration for health and hygiene, the following dress code is required:
-
A top and bottom must be worn at all times. An exception to this policy is in the locker room or changing areas. Patrons may remove their shirt during basketball game play.
-
Participants must wear closed-toed, non-marking athletic shoes in all fitness and court spaces. Campus Rec does not permit patrons to workout barefoot, in just socks, or in any kind of sandal (i.e., Crocs, slides, flip flops).
Facility Access and Code of Conduct
Entrance/Exit and Member ID
Membership or day pass purchase is required to access the facility. Students and other ISU faculty/staff members with Bengal ID cards will access the gym using their Bengal ID card or number. Those without a Bengal ID (community members, alumni, etc.) will be issued a Rec Card and ID number.
Enter the Student Recreation Center through Reed Gym at the Front Desk turnstiles. The other exits are alarmed and for emergency use only.
All Campus Recreation patrons are required to swipe/tab their Bengal ID Card, Campus Rec ID, or enter their ID number before entering the facility. Patrons without an associated photo will not be permitted to enter. Using another person’s ID to enter the gym is considered an Act of Dishonesty and will be investigated by ISU Student Conduct. Public Safety will investigate identity theft, and gym privileges will be suspended for both individuals. Entry may be refused, or privileges suspended/revoked, for Code of Conduct violations.
Code of Conduct Expectations
Members, students, guests, and participants agree to adhere to the following expectations:
-
Act in a safe, responsible manner regarding yourself and others.
-
Treat Campus Recreation staff and facilities with respect.
-
Be courteous and respect the rights, welfare, and dignity of other users or participants.
-
Follow rules and policies set by Campus Recreation and the University.
Campus Recreation reserves the right to remove anyone whose behavior is unruly or illegal. Membership privileges will be revoked without a refund.
Day Passes and Spectators
Day Pass Types
Day passes may be purchased at the Student Rec Center Front Desk. A day pass is good for gym and pool areas for that day, from opening to close. A receipt should be requested for same-day return entry.
-
A 10-visit “punch” pass is available. Passes are transferable (shareable), do not expire, are not refundable, and lost cards will not be reissued.
-
A 7-day pass is available but is not transferable, shareable, or refundable, and must be used only by the person named on the card.
Pass users are not gym members and do not receive member benefits. Pass users may not bring their children in for free during family hours and may not make tennis court reservations (drop-in court use is permitted). Patrons must be 18 or older to purchase any pass. Non-member minors accompanied and supervised by a paying adult or adult member may use a 10-visit pass or purchase a day pass.
Spectator Policy
Campus Recreation does not offer a spectator rate or free guest passes. Anyone entering the gym needs to be a member, an activity-fee-paying student, or purchase a day pass. Even people who are “just going to watch” must purchase a day pass. Exceptions include: those touring the facility, spectators for formal intramural activities, spectators for scheduled, formal tennis matches, and minors during free family hours who remain with the member.
Minors in the Facility
Campus Recreation strives to meet the needs of ISU students by providing an adult fitness environment.
-
Patrons under age 16 are not permitted in any weight, cardio equipment, or adjacent areas.
-
Non-member patrons under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
-
Non-member minors must be at least 16 years old to use cardio equipment, weights, or machines.
-
A photo ID may be requested for age verification. Minors cannot purchase a day pass and enter without an adult guardian.
-
Supervised minors may enter at any time, but outside of free family hours, a day pass must be purchased.
Minors with Memberships
-
Memberships for minors age 16 to 19 are available for dependents of faculty, staff, students, and Alumni Association members. A minor with no ISU affiliation may not be sold a monthly membership.
-
Special Circumstances: 16- and 17- year-old members (dual enrolled or dependent members) may use the weight/cardio areas and climbing wall without adult supervision. They are issued a Bengal or Rec card. Minors 15 years and younger require supervision.
Policy For Children Under Age 2
Children under age two are permitted into the Rec Center at no charge. Babies must remain in their carrier or seat and be actively supervised from within arm’s reach at all times. Babies are not permitted in the cardio, free weights, adjacent areas, or climbing area, even in carriers.
Strollers
Minors in strollers or infant seats must remain within reach of their parent/guardian and may not be left unattended. Babies in strollers are not permitted in any weights, cardio equipment, or adjacent areas. Strollers are permitted on the indoor walking track as long as use by other patrons is not disrupted.
Climbing Wall Policies For Minors
-
Children under age 8 are not permitted to climb and must remain in the non-climbing area under active adult supervision.
-
The “climbing area” includes the belay and mat areas.
-
For any minor to climb, an Assumption of Risk must be signed by the participant and the parent/legal guardian.
-
For children ages 8 to 15, a 1:1 ratio—one adult participant for each child participant—is required for open climb.
Membership Categories and Fees
Family Hours
Members may bring their tax dependent children (to age 19) for free during family hours. Free family hours do not include spouses, siblings, parents, friends, etc. Pass users must pay for their children.
-
Fall/Spring Semesters: Fridays; Saturday & Sunday all open hours.
-
Summer, Breaks, and University Holidays: All open hours.
Special Statuses
-
Dual Enrolled Students: High school students dual-enrolled in ISU courses may purchase a membership at the student rate after obtaining a Bengal ID. They need a parent/guardian signature on the Assumption of Risk, but a semester membership allows them to use the gym/climbing wall without an adult.
-
Gap Memberships: ISU students on a one-semester break or summer off may be eligible for a semester gym pass at the student rate, provided they were enrolled in the preceding semester and pre-enrolled for the subsequent one. Proof of enrollment is required. A gap membership may not be purchased for two consecutive semesters.
-
Waived Activity Fee Students: Reduced- and waived-fee students (e.g., senior citizen students, enrolled spouses/faculty/staff, dual enrolled students) are eligible to purchase a semester membership at the student rate.
-
Visiting Students: Students from another University/College may purchase a semester membership (proof of enrollment required), but not for two consecutive semesters or more than once per academic year.
-
Spouses: Student spouses may purchase a spouse Bengal ID card ($30/semester) and are eligible for the student semester rate. F/S spouses receive a free Bengal ID and are eligible for the F/S rate, often via payroll deduction.
Payment and Refunds
The Front Desk accepts Visa or Mastercard, checks, or cash (no Discover or American Express). Membership fees for benefit-eligible faculty and staff may be paid via payroll deduction.
Refunds: Purchase of memberships, services, and lockers are non-refundable. Patrons seeking a refund due to unforeseen circumstances may submit a formal request for consideration.

-
PEAC Classes: Student Rec Center spaces (courts, track, climbing wall, free weights) are used as classrooms for for-credit Physical Education Activity (PEAC) courses. These areas are not open to public participation during scheduled course times.
